Fire-Wise Privacy: Screening the Foothills

1

The Diagnostic: Homeowners in high-fire zones (like the Santa Ynez or Santa Barbara foothills) often plant fast-growing “torches” like Italian Cypress or dense Junipers to create quick privacy screens, unknowingly creating a major liability against their home.

The Science: “Fire-wise” landscaping does not mean the plants are completely fire-proof. It refers to selecting species with high internal moisture content and low resin/sap levels. These plants take significantly longer to ignite and do not produce the intense, explosive heat that conifers do.

The Red Flags:

  • Hedges filled with dead, dry, woody material on the interior (a common trait of sheared Junipers).
  • Plants that produce “fine fuels” like shedding needle-like leaves that trap flying embers.

The ArborSolutions Guide’s Action: We recommend replacing high-resin screens with species like Toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia) or Podocarpus. These provide dense, evergreen privacy but act as a “green shield” rather than a fuse during a wildfire event.

The information above serves as a general guide, but every landscape is a complex, individual living system. If you are seeing these red flags on your property, don’t leave the health and safety of your landscape to guesswork.

At ArborSolutions, we do not sell or perform tree removal or landscaping services. We provide unbiased data and professional advice. We like to think of ourselves as the second opinion go-to before any major property or tree work decisions are made.
